Burning Candles of Sinulog

Burning Candles, an offering trandition.

It is a tradition of us Filipinos to offer a candle for prayers to our loved ones' specially for those who have passed away, and if there is a religious occasions or fiesta.  Mostly you can see these in all churches of the Philippines, where a candle vendor will ask you to buy a candle from him/her for offering.  In Sto. Niño de Cebu basilica, most of the vendor will ask you to buy a candle for a "sinug" which means to call the child Jesus for praise and assistance in a manner of dancing.  Some "sinug" means "pag sa-ulog" or celebration.  A literally abbreviated word of Sinulog.

The candles burned on the photo has already been "sinug" before it lit up and placed in a barrel.

This shot is taken a night before Sinulog, after the solemn procession for the fiesta of Sr. Sto. Niño de Cebu.
